Abstract:

Safety is crucial while developing either a simple product or complicated systems such as Light Rail Transit Systems. To ensure that safety is embedded in a product system, a hazard management process should be established throughout its life cycle. This begins with hazard identification, safety risk assessment, elimination, or mitigation for acceptance.

When a hazard or a combination of hazards is identified, each hazard is resolved by either eliminating the risk or mitigating the risk consistent with the principle of As Low As Reasonably Practicable (ALARP). The resolution of hazards is closely tied to the Certification of Conformance process, where each certifiable element within the system is verified and validated to provide traceability between applied mitigations and the evidence that these hazards have been adequately controlled or closed.

This presentation illustrates the hazard resolution and certification process using an LRT system as a case study, to deem it safe for operations.
