Presentation 1
Topic: Review of NE Tennessee Section Project to Recognize and Encourage Excellence in K-12 Education - (Awarded 2024 Best Practice by ASQ)
The Northeast Tennessee Section of ASQ has a long-standing history of supporting education for over 30 years. The latest project aims to recognize, reinforce, and encourage achievement and excellence in K-12 education. The project involves routinely reviewing regional media for examples of educational achievement and sending congratulatory emails to educators, with copies to community leaders. Feedback indicates that these congratulatory emails are greatly appreciated.
Hank Somers, the Coordinator for Support of K-12 Education for the ASQ NE Tennessee Section, will review the project's origins and evolution, including project details, example emails, feedback, and lessons learned.
Feedback from educators and community leaders suggests that this project effectively reinforces the efforts and positive results of educators and the education system. Additionally, the project expands the Section's outreach and helps introduce the American Society for Quality (ASQ) as an organization committed to excellence to local educators and community leaders.
If member units choose to implement a similar project, it can be tailored to fit the available time and resources. The costs for the Section are minimal.
The project was suggested for and awarded a 2024 Best Practice by ASQ.

Presentation 2
Sources of Variation Analysis with Multi-Vari Charts and GLM
Multi-Vari charts and the General Linear Model (GLM) are effective tools for analyzing Sources of Variation data to compute variance components. By decomposing the total variability into parts attributed to different random factors, one can identify the primary contributors to the overall variability. This insight is essential for prioritizing efforts aimed at reducing variation and implementing statistical process control.
Agenda:
- Introduction to General Linear Model (GLM) for Variance Components
- Basic Sources of Variation: Within, Between, Over-Time data
- Graphical tools: Multi-Vari and I-MR-R/S
- GLM Analysis of Within, Between, Over-Time data
- Destructive (Nested) Gage R&R with Shear Test Data
- Case Study: Assembly Time Data from Nested Factorial Design – Unbalanced
Speaker Bio:
