refresh your skills:  Configuration Control, a part of Configuration Management, is the formal process that manages and controls modifications to hardware, firmware, software, and associated documentation (revision levels) so the configuration of a product or system is known, reproducible, and maintained over its lifecycle.  For a single component (configuration item) this is usually straightforward; for complex assemblies (cars, aircraft, medical devices) many parts—each potentially subject to design or process changes—must remain compatible after integration. Effective configuration control:
• protects system integrity by ensuring component compatibility and traceability for changes made before, during, and after system implementation;
• enables managers to specify and record which product versions are in use or in production, track their status, and document functional and dependency relationships among configuration items;
• provides change-board governance (e.g., change requests, impact analysis, approvals), baselining, versioning, and controlled release mechanisms to prevent unintended regressions;
• ensures auditability and reproducibility (records of who changed what, when, why, and how to revert if needed).
