Topic: David Duffie explains the Virginia Ship Repair Association's (VSRA) consolidated quality management system auditing process, benefits to Hampton Roads ship repair subcontractors for participating, and audit challenges that VSRA faces. Lucy King discusses how the lean six sigma project management tool of work breakdown structure (WBS) can be used in continual improvement projects and provides an example of using WBS to implement document control for weld procedures at a ship repair organization.


Bios: Dave Duffie is a retired Navy Captain after having served for 30 years in the Submarine Force. Following retirement Dave has worked at 4 different manufacturing companies. He has held positions as General Manager, Vice President, and Director of Quality. For the past 8 years, Dave has specifically been working in Quality Management. He is currently the Director of Quality at Fairlead, Inc in Portsmouth, VA. He has both a Green Belt and Black Belt in Lean Principles. He has been a member of ASQ-1128 and is on the leadership committee. Dave is on 3 Boards of Directors and is a member of 2 other membership organizations here in the Hampton Roads area. He is married and living in Chesapeake, VA.

Lucy King has over 15 years of experience in the quality management and engineering fields. She has worked in industries such as manufacturing, oil drilling, and military ship repair, helping to build companies’ process infrastructure and turn around their performance. Combined with a bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering, master’s degree in business administration, ISO 9001:2015 Lead Auditor certification, and ASQ Six Sigma Black Belt certification, she understands and can accommodate complex business and production processes. Her proven performance has contributed to multiple promotions and millions of dollars in labor and material savings, process improvements, improved customer satisfaction, retention, and attraction, and increase in revenue for several companies. Lucy is the owner of King QA, LLC, which develops quality management systems, conducts audits, consults on lean six sigma programs, and provides training.
