March 2024 Chair’s Message

Greetings Valued ASQ Phoenix Section Members –

It’s springtime in Arizona! In my opinion, there are few things that beat this time of year in our state. There are just so many wonderful things to look forward to. The weather is perfect for spending time outdoors, professional baseball teams travel to the valley for Spring Training, and ASQ’s Lean and Six Sigma Conference is held in town. This year, on top of everything else, the ASQ Phoenix Section is offering continued training in Greenbelt Tollgate Tools. See what I mean? So many great opportunities!

I had the pleasure of attending the Lean and Six Sigma Conference this year through my participation as a Technical Planning Committee Member as well as a conference volunteer. Those of you who have attended the conference in the past know that it was held at The Pointe Hilton Tapatio Cliffs Resort for a number of years. This year, it was moved to The Renaissance Hotel in Glendale; a move that turned out to be very favorable for the conference due to the hotel’s recently upgraded amenities as well as numerous nearby options for entertainment and dining at the Westgate Entertainment District.

The presentations were also a hit among conference goers this year. They covered a wide variety of topics, so it was difficult to select just one for each session (luckily, the sessions are recorded, so attendees are able to listen to presentations that they might have missed following the conference). The keynote presentations were also phenomenal, covering topics including building joyful workplace cultures, achieving lasting impact through leadership, and simplifying success by focusing on one action goal. The presentations were not only informative, they were also encouraging and inspiring. At the conclusion of each of them, I left feeling energized and ready to tackle my goals!

During breaks and lunches, I spent some time at the Phoenix Section’s booth in the vendor hall. This provided the perfect opportunity for promoting the Phoenix Section and our upcoming events. I also held a raffle for two section branded travel tumblers. Congratulations to our raffle winners Dhana H. and David C! Please see below for photos of the lucky recipients!

Tumbler Winner 2 Dhana H.

During a special awards ceremony at the conference, one of the Phoenix Section’s Senior Leadership Team members was honored. Chuck Cox received the Six Sigma Forum Award for advancement of Six Sigma. Chuck was the perfect recipient for the award due to his lifetime practice and expansion of the use of Six Sigma to drive breakthrough improvements. Congratulations, Chuck! I am proud to have you on our team!

If you missed the conference this year, don’t fret. There are still opportunities for training coming up with the Phoenix Section. Greenbelt Tollgate Tools Part Three will be available via Zoom on March 27th from 3:00-5:15 p.m. This training will cover the ‘measure’ step of the DMAIC process. The presentation will be led by Kevin Lehigh, a Lean expert and Master Blackbelt who has worked for multiple Fortune 500 companies. For additional information on this training, please visit myasq.org and search for the Phoenix Section.

Thank you to each of you for your continued membership with ASQ and the Phoenix Section. I am grateful to each of you and look forward to serving you and providing added member value activities for you throughout this next year.

Until I see you next, please stay healthy, stay safe, and stay connected.

Cheers!

Hilary Werner
