  • 1.  Open book: post-it notes?

    Posted 07/13/23 01:44 PM

On the description of what is and is not allowed to be taken into the exams, it says that post-it notes are permitted as book tabs only. Are we allowed to label the post-it tabs? Like if I have a post-it marking the section of the book that covers the different gurus and what they are known for can I write "Gurus" on the edge of the post-it?

In regards to the ASQ-CQE exam, it is typically conducted at a Prometric center. I have personally attended an exam at such a center, but it was for the American Petroleum Institute (API), not ASQ. Based on my experience, Prometric centers generally do not allow any tabs or additional reference materials during the exam.

If the CQE exam is an open book exam, you may have the option to access your reference materials in the exam window. However, you won't be able to use the search function. Instead, you will need to have a good understanding of where specific topics are located in your reference book to find the relevant information efficiently. The use of shortcut keys to directly locate information may not be applicable in this scenario.

Please note that exam procedures and rules can vary between different organizations and exams. Therefore, it's essential to carefully review the specific guidelines provided by ASQ for the CQE exam to ensure compliance and a smooth exam experience. If you have any doubts or questions, I recommend reaching out to Prometric center directly for clarification.

    Hi Stephanie,

Were you able to find out if we can write the topic/theme on the tabs?

    Thank you for sharing.

    Hi Leonardo,

Yes, I took the exam in August and I had color coded post its for each section of the handbook with writing on them for what specific topic or tool was being marked.

Thank you for your response Stephanie. Hope you did well.

I did the same and now I am preparing an extra critical stack (besides the ASQ Handbook) in a 3 ring binder with personal notes I've made along my study path. Wondering if that is allowable as well.

    Thanks

    Hello Everyone,
    Hope you are doing well!

@ Leonardo, yes, a 3-ring binder is allowed in the examination center.

I also plan to take the CQE exam in August'24 and am now preparing carry-in notes for it. I have some queries about the notes if anyone can revert, which are as follows-
    1. How many pages in a notebook are ideal for note-taking?
    2. What is the best kind of notebook: a 3-ring binder, Spiral binder, or glued notebook?
    3. Is Casio fx-991 ES plus allowed in the examination center?

    Thanks in advance,

Hi, were you able to get the answers to your question? Can we take a notebook with handwritten notes?

    Hi Wajeeha,

I've taken the CCT exam twice. You can have all your reference material and hand written notes but the stipulation is that THEY MUST BE BOUND. I believe bound in a notebook is fine. My notes were three-hole punched and clasped in a three-ring binder. You can even bring materials like a sheet with unit conversions. Particularly useful for the PSI to Pascal questions on the CCT. But again, they must be bound which is as simple as three-hole punching the print out and putting it in your binder. For post-its, it's interesting they call out a brand name rather than what they are, which are page flags, but that can be from the small flags to the full sized post-its.

The important thing here is, no loose papers, no fancy calculator, and be advised the desks at Prometric are kind of small.

    Hello, Wajeeha!

Yes, this is the response I received from ASQ-

"Candidates are able to use hard copy handbooks and notes during their exam. All notes can be handwritten or typed. All notes must be bound in a binder, and all notes must have notes on each side of every page as you cannot have any loose or blank pages during the exam. A spiral notebook or 3-ring binder would be acceptable to use. Candidates are able to use one non-programmable calculator during their exam. Prometric will inspect the materials when you arrive for your exam and will determine if the materials are acceptable to use."

    Thanks,

    Vijay

When I took my CQE exam, it was an in-person exam at a test center.

I took in 3 resources and passed successfully on the first try as did the rest of my cohort for that exam.

    1. the ASQ CQE Manual which was tabbed using the Avery printable index tabs, tabbed out at the chapter-level with the chapter title, Table of Contents and Index. It took me less than an hour to set this up, print and compile.
    2. The Indiana Quality Council CQE Manual - in this case, I got the Avery dividers (pre-numbered) and created the Table of contents that comes with the dividers. Be sure to remove the Blue pages at the end of each chapter as those are not allowed.
    3. A 3-ring binder with tabbed dividers containing the regulations and standards that were called out in the ASQ CQE Manual.

In preparing for the exams we had study teams with a set schedule to review a chapter per week, up to two weeks before the exam, but you could do this individually - working through the problem sets and highlighting your resources as you work through the chapters and the problems.

Having a good command of the materials as well as the ability to search quickly for anything you cannot remember easily is key.

For the CQE, having a good command of statistics will serve you too, as there were calculations required for some questions.   I did my first pass based on answers I knew easily, then second pass for things I needed to look up, third pass for calculations.

Bring water and snacks, eat a decent breakfast, a good dinner the night before, and get a good night's rest before the exam. In our case, it was December, it was cold and snowy with inclement weather forecasted, so we traveled and stayed at a nearby hotel rather than risking the stress of travel in the morning and being late.
