I agree with Justin - it can be subjective. We had a cohort of people in our company who were all studying to take the exam when I took it.
We had a formal statistics class (40 hours with a manual) as well as using the Indiana Quality Council Primer and the ASQ CQE Manual with questions and solutions.
We had daily sessions (M-F) for an hour plus a two-hour session on Saturdays where anyone could come and ask questions. Each week we covered one or two chapters (we set up a syllabus) and assigned presenters for each chapter. We all passed first try. There was a LOT of peer pressure to not be that only person in the group who failed, so we all studied hard and helped each other when needed to understand the materials.
Second group, we had 12 team members who had an ASQ trained consultant run a weekly course for us. 10 of the 12 passed first try.
It depends on how much discipline you have to study individually versus the accountability of being in a course with others.
Best wishes on a first-time pass.

I would expect this is relatively subjective. I am set to take my CQE in June (yet to set date), but have the ASQ Quality Engineer Handbook and the Quality Council of Indiana Primer. I expect to study 4-5 hours a week until then with both sources and use the QCI USB Question bank throughout...
