I'm wishing to get the CMQ/OE certification. However, I'm wondering, is this the right choice for me. I appreciate any feedback. Thank you in advance.

Hi @Kruti Shah CMQ/OE is a great choice, but it really depends on where you want to go. Use the Certification Pathways Tool to help you determine where you'd like to go.

best of luck!

Hello Trish, thank you for your reply. I have been many times visited but still continue wondering what will be the best to add in my profile. I would like to connect with someone or you, to understand further on making a right choice. There are top 2 that I am aiming for which are CMQ/CE and/or CQE certification.

Some questions/thoughts:

  • Why do you want the certification … to validate your current knowledge or to help you prepare for the future?
  • Which of the BOKs are you more knowledgeable of or experienced with?

The CQE is technically oriented (narrow) versus the CMQ/OE more management oriented (very broad).

Duke is correct to ask about your career direction. If you prefer to stay in leadership and management, then CMQ/OE is the correct path. If you choose to pursue a quantitative, technical career, then CQE will give you stronger credibility. CMQ/OE is very close to an MBA, without all the economics.

In my case, I did the CQE prior to the CMQ/OE and found the progression to be very helpful. The work done to prepare for CQE can be leveraged toward CMQ/OE, but the opposite is not necessarily the case.

There is also a learning curve to ASQ exams in general, and I would actually suggest CQPA as an initial option. This is a permanent (no requirement to renew every 3 years) certification and would cover about 50-60% of the subject material for both CQE and CMQ/OE.

If I had to do it over or was advising someone based on currently available options and opportunities, I would not attempt either CQE or CMQ/OE as my first ASQ certification.

This is the CQPA Body of Knowledge.

There is no such thing as an “easy” ASQ Certification. However, if you can complete this, you should approach CQE and CMQ/OE with more confidence.

Thank you Duke for your reply. I would like to be in management and leadership role. However, I like to be a leader who is also strong in their technical knowledge. I think, I have an answer now as I will aim to achieve CMQ/OE after passing CQE.
