Presentation: “Telling Our Story – A History Of Our Section” by Jim Tregaskis and Alberto Miller In 2022, the Binghamton ASQ Section celebrated its 75 th year as one of the oldest sections in the ASQ International organization, which was known at the beginning as the American Society for Quality Control.

Are you interested in the history of the Binghamton Section? Ever wonder how it started and evolved over the years? Ever curious about the activities, events, and people who contributed to the success of the section over the 75-year span? If your answer is YES, we have the book for you! Jim and Alberto have researched and compiled the history of the section to create an interesting fact- filled book. The 180 page, conveniently-sized 8.5” x 5.5” full color, spiral bound, soft cover book brings our history records together into a single source. The seven chapters begin with an overview of the “quality movement” leading the formation of what is now known world-wide as the American Society for Quality. It’s an interesting evolution since the earliest days of manufacturing and service provision. This presentation will introduce you to the book, provide interesting and entertaining facts, and provide information on how you can obtain a personal hard copy, or access the pdf.

About the speakers:

James D. (Jim) Tregaskis

Mr. Tregaskis began his quality-related journey first as a Technician in the IBM Endicott’s Quality Engineering Component Services Laboratory where he became the International Procurement Quality Coordinator responsible for developing reliable sources for electrical components in Japan.

He moved into his first management assignment in Precision Machining Operations and then Manufacturing Manager in the high-speed printer assembly and test operations. He later returned to the Quality Assurance function as Quality Manager for the next generation of bank reader/sorter systems which led to creating a Data Management Group (DMG) to provide timely, automated collection, analysis, and reporting of product performance data.

In 1993, after a 30-year IBM career, he retired as a member of the Endicott Site Quality Office where he was responsible for a variety business process improvement projects. After retirement, he joined Binghamton based, Global System, before starting his own DBA business, Quality Management Resources (QMR); providing ISO 9000 training, consulting, and quality management system auditing

services. In late 2022, Jim retired (again!) after providing over 2.5 decades of service as a Lead Auditor with Bureau Veritas Certification (NA), Inc.

Jim has been actively involved in the Binghamton ASQ section since the early 1980’s. In the 2010 period, Jim introduced digital photography for maintaining records of section events and played an active role in promoting the section’s visibility throughout the Greater Binghamton business community. He served as Publicity Chairperson from 2011 to 2019 and received the Paul Robert Award in 2011.
