Quality Matters Round Table: ASQ Sections

Moderated by
Ken Rapuano
ASQ Section 0511 Secretary

Ken Rapuano
Short Narrative/Description:
ASQ Section 0511 is a community of quality professionals of Northern Virginia, with tremendous cumulative experience across multiple industries, companies, and government agencies. Any single one of you in our ASQ Section is a formidable source of takes, opinions, and lessons on a number of Quality Matters.
  • A Quality Matter is an aspect, focus, slice, segment of the quality landscape that one deals with in a particular situation.
  • Quality Matters Round Table is a series of discussions on the Quality Matters topics noted at the May 2021 Section Meeting.
  • In each such discussion, the Section Members share their experience and opinions on one such topic and network as Quality Professionals.
Previous Round Table Discussions were:
  • July 2021 on the topic of “Plans and Process Descriptions”. Its Discussion Report is upcoming soon.
  • June 2021 on the topic of “ASQ Certifications”. Its Discussion Report is posted here: http://www.asq0511.org/Presentations/202106/ASQ0511_202106_QualityMattersReport-ASQCertifications-Report.pdf
The 11 August 2021 Section 0511 meeting is a Round Table Discussion on one of the 9 winning topics that you voted for in our June 2021 poll, namely: ASQ Sections.
Moderator Background:

Additional Information
IMPORTANT: The topic of “ASQ Sections” to be discussed on 11 August 2021 is of paramount importance.
  • This discussion is not a call for volunteers. No calls for volunteers will be made during this discussion.
  • This discussion is to find members’ expectations for the Section’s Products, Services, Role, and Activities.
  • The Section is putting together a formal Product and Service Catalog to define how the Section can best serve its members. The results of this discussion will be used as input to that Catalog.
  • This discussion is the ULTIMATE Voice of the Customer session.  Your opinion matters!

Quality Matters Polls:
If you have not yet done so, please respond by Sunday Night Midnight 8 August 2021 to the poll conducted by our Section 0511 Chair for Voice of the Customer:
Your answers are a direct input in helping us determine the direction in which this Section will evolve.  It will also help us to prepare for the 14 July 2021 Round Table better.
This poll is the third Quality Matters poll but not the last. Even if you have missed this poll’s deadline, come to the 11 July 2021 Round Table Discussion anyway.  And then keep an eye for future polls.

Quality Matters: Questions on ASQ Sections
The following questions on the topic of ASQ Sections will be up for discussion at the 11 August 2021 Section 0511 Round Table:
  1. Non-RU Attendance.  Are there any people in attendance who do not need RUs?  If you do not need RUs provided by such meetings, then why are you attending this or any ASQ Section meeting?
  2. Recertification Strategy.  Do the meeting RUs provide all the RUs that you need?  Or do you have to look for additional RU opportunities?  What additional activities do you take upon to supplement your RUs?  Are you satisfied with those additional activities, or is obtaining additional RUs a challenge?
  3. Onsite Attendance.  With the lifting of 2020-2021 in-person restrictions, the Section Meetings are expected to move back to onsite locations.  This will allow in-person participation; but this will also require driving.  Will you attend the onsite meetings?  Or is the reason you attend that it is online?  How much of a commute will in-person attendance add to you?  How many onsite meetings will you skip if meeting is onsite?
  4. Streaming.  Section 0511 is working to implement the streaming of its programs to accommodate both Featured Speaker and Round Table Discussion formats.  If the meeting is available both onsite and steamed online, which one will you attend?  How likely will you attend online when you cannot attend in person?
  5. Dinner.  The Section Program is traditionally preceded by an hour-long Dinner.  Will you attend the dinners when the Section Meetings move back onsite?  Why or why not?  Is cost, time, commute, or anything else a factor in your decision?
  6. Section Business.  Section volunteers bring concise but relevant information about the Section to you during the Section Business segment at the beginning of the meeting.  For example, recent meetings informed you on the results of the Section’s polls, Quality Matters Reports, volunteer opportunities and nominations, and issues.  Do you find this informative and relevant to you?
  7. Non-Traditional Meeting Formats.  Occasionally, the Section conducts meeting that are not in a traditional presentation or discussion format.  Those include guided tours at businesses or parks (with RUs) and December Annual Social gatherings (no RUs).  Did you participate in such in the past?  Are you likely to participate in such in the future?
  8. ASQ.  Do you rely on the Section to obtain information about ASQ other than the Section?  Do you want the Section 0511 meetings discuss the ASQ structure, initiatives, certifications, conferences, publications, divisions, or other sections?  Do you want this Section’s assistance in participating in them, for example, in ASQ conferences?
  9. Certification Strategy.  Do you rely on the Section to help you obtain your first or additional ASQ Certifications?  What type of information or help do you expect the Section to provide?  Would you like to hear from holders of such certifications to help you make decision and prepare?
  10. Quality Training.  Do you use any training provided by Section, Divisions, or ASQ itself?  Why do you need training from those groups?  What type of training are you interested in?  What duration or cost would be acceptable?
  11. Job Opportunities.  Have you resorted or would you resort to the Section to help you find employment as a Quality Professional?  What type of information or help do you expect the Section to provide?  Would you like assistance with resume preparation or circulation?  Are you interested in Quality Professional job opportunities in Northern Virginia?
  12. Networking Opportunities.  ASQ Section 0511 is a community of quality professionals of Northern Virginia, with tremendous cumulative experience across multiple industries, companies, and government agencies.  Do you network with other QPs in the Section?  Why or why not?  Do the Featured Speaker Presentations, Round Table Discussions, Tour Outings, or Annual Social Meetings help you network?
  13. Volunteer Opportunities.  Do you have a clear understanding of the volunteer opportunities that the Section provides and how volunteering is rewarded?  How do you prefer that the volunteer opportunities are communicated:
    • Through a section meeting fully dedicated to a call for volunteers (example: September 2020, March 2021)?
    • Through a brief mention at the beginning of the meeting (example: July 2021)?
    • No volunteer calls during the meeting (but, perhaps, posted on the Section’s web site, announced via emails, or solicited through polls)?
    • Through one-on-one conversations (such as with the Nominating Chair)?
  14. Web Site and Communications.  Section 0511 communicates with its members through its website postings, Twitter messages, emails, and polls.  Do you use any of them?  Why or why not?  Are there any communication avenues that you believe are missing?
  15. Other Section Services.  Are there any other services you expect the Section to provide or behaviors you expect the Section to exhibit not yet discussed?
Read these questions now and become familiar with them.  The questions discussed at the 11 August 2021 Round Table may be slightly modified from the above in case good improvements to those questions are received through our poll; however, they will not differ significantly from the above, if at all.

You Speak Up, I Moderate:
At the August 2021 meeting, YOU are the speaker:
  • The meeting is a Round Table discussion, not a presentation by a Featured Speaker.
  • You should speak up.  You can get floor multiple times.  Please do!
  • If you decide only to listen what others say and not share your experience and opinions, that is your choice, and it will be respected.  You are encouraged to attend the discussion anyway if only to listen; you will not be called out to speak unless you speak up!
  • Speak of your personal experience and express your personal opinions.
  • You do not need to prepare a speech or slides, just speak up.  You already know your experience and your opinions, and that is all that matters.
  • Time will not allow lengthy speeches.  We have 5-7 minutes per question, on average.  So, be brief and share floor with others, so that several people could speak on every question.
  • Time will not allow digressions.  Speak on the topic and, specifically, on the question that is up for discussion.  (Did I mention you should become familiar with the questions above?)
  • Time will not allow discussion of similar topics.  For example, topics such as American Society for Quality, ASQ Certifications, Quality Professional are NOT in scope of this discussion unless mentioning them reflects DIRECTLY upon your experience with and opinions on ASQ Sections.
  • The list of the questions will be displayed during the discussion.  We will go by the question list, top to bottom.  Thus, limit your speech to the question at hand, perhaps drawing on the previously stated material but holding off on the questions that are still down the list.
  • It is OK to speak on some questions and not on some others.  Time will not allow everyone to speak on every question anyway.
  • Your experience is unique and differs from the experience of others.  Make it known!  It is irrelevant what some book says on this topic or what they said on this topic someplace else.  What matters is what YOU think on this NOW.
  • A discussion is not a debate.  You will get floor to express your experience and opinions on this Quality Matter, not to criticize the experience and opinions of other discussion participants.
  • A discussion is not a Q&A session with the Moderator.  The questions on the agenda are up for you to speak on, not for finding correct answers that do not exist.
  • Have fun!  This is your chance to get to know other Quality Professionals better and allow others to get to know you.
Meetings are open to all ASQ members as well as to the public.

Next Meeting:
