This month, a special evening in two parts: firstly, Marcel Charbonneau's presentation of the Denis Pronovost 2022 Award, followed by a workshop on « What do Quality Professionals need/want to learn? by Raymond Dyer.

Denis Pronovost Award: To celebrate the 30+ year career of our friend Denis Pronovost, who passed away in June 2015, the Montreal Chapter has created an award led by Marcel Charbonneau. Denis was greatly involved in promoting the quality of French in Quebec and was a frequent guest and speaker at our section. He worked primarily in teaching and consulting in management, quality assurance and auditing. He was a member of the Canadian Advisory Committee of ISO/TC 176, particularly on the working groups on terminology, interpretations and joint CAC/ISO/TC 176/CAC/ISO TC 207 on auditing and the ISO 19011 audit standard.

Marcel Charbonneau, T.P., ASQ CQA, presented the award to Patrick Barnes, a student in the Quality Management and Assurance Certificate program at École de technologie supérieure. According to Ms. Bélanger at ÉTS, Patrick reflects a consistency in his academic results; the presentation of a subject related to quality management (e.g. an internship related to quality techniques and tools); his participation, attitude, team spirit and involvement; and, the respect of the French language in his texts and oral presentations.

Patrick then presented the team work done in his QUA142 Quality Management and Improvement course and all the professionals present appreciated it since it fit very well with the theme of the workshop on "What do quality professionals need/want to learn? - a great demonstration of the application of quality tools in the field. Patrick's project focused on "Reducing documentation errors in the analytical department" of a pharmaceutical company that manufactures and develops products in solid, semi-solid and liquid forms. Various documentation errors in analytical reports; data entry and missing information at the time of verification of analytical reports were causing delays in product approval. The presentation demonstrated the practical application of the various analytical steps and tools used to solve this problem, including Problem Statement; Project Rationale; SMART Goal; Define and Measure; Analyze; Improve; and, Control.

The team used the following typical tools to conduct their analyses: Analytical Service Flowchart; Error Compilation; Pareto Charts with multiple levels of analysis; Affinity and Interrelationship Charts; Interrelationship Chart Analysis; Selected Solutions; Gantt Chart and Control Plan. Patrick concluded his presentation by explaining what the company had chosen as actions and why and the results obtained to date.

In this second part, Raymond Dyer, Section Chair and Program Leader, gave a brief presentation of the different components associated with the technologies that represent the areas and expertise associated with quality professionals: engineering; management; auditing; Six Sigma; quality fundamentals; technique; standards; tools; approaches; and, competencies. He then challenged the participants to identify, in working groups, the skills and expertise required by today's professionals, to group them together and to propose at least five. Here are some of the topics raised:

  • The difference between Quality Engineering and the Six Sigma Black Belt (SSBB) body of knowledge (BOK)
  • Tools for metrics, i.e. basic Quality tools and when to use, e.g. Goal QPC Memory Jogger
  • Understanding, selecting, and rating Supplier Quality & Tools Review and analysis of suppliers, e.g. metrics, audits, certifications, bar codes, different tools for different suppliers
  • More Root Cause Analysis (RCA) tools
  • Design of experiments (DOE) as a starting point
  • Analytical & problem solving skills
  • Creativity
  • Analytical skills (statistical thinking) and knowledge of data collection methods (automation to prevent errors),
  • Standards (ISO, GMP, etc.) specific and general understanding
  • Risk management (thinking of balanced risk)
  • Indigenous conceptions of continuous improvement Dwight Powless & Linda Manning “A path forward – Continuous Improvement Through an Indigenous Lens” (ref. Ruth Stanley)
  • Preparation before Plan of PDCA
  • Understanding algorithms vs. standard work instructions DSIG division (could be a panel discussion) (ref. Ruth Stanley)

Lots of good ideas raised. Thanks! More follow-up to come!
