Using Taguchi Experiments to Optimize 3D Printing
Summary of presentation:
This presentation will introduce a study of applying Taguchi experiments in performance optimization of recycled PETG 3D printing material, with the goal of matching the performance of virgin 3D printing material. The printer being used for this experiment is the Snapmaker F-350. The response variables being considered are surface quality, a critical dimension, weight, and cycle time. The goal is to have a defect-free functional product with the dimension of the critical characteristic and weight close to target while minimizing printing time. The control factors being considered are Layer Height, Infill Percentage, Number of Shells, Extruder Temperature, Feed Rate, and Travel Speed. The response variables will be evaluated using the noise conditions of recycled PETG vs. the virgin PETG.
Major takeaways from this study include how to use the Plan-Do-Study-Act (PDSA) and the Taguchi orthogonal array in process optimization. In the Plan phase, the experimental design will be set up, followed by the Do phase where the experimental runs are conducted, and data is collected. The Study phase includes analysis of results such as means plots as well as signal-to-noise (S/N) ratios. Best settings are then decided based on consistent performance across noise conditions. Recommendations for future work will be summarized in the Act phase. This project was presented as a poster at the ATMAE Annual Conference in October 2023 in Atlanta by one of our graduating seniors.
About the Presenter
Mustafa Shraim
Mustafa Shraim is an Associate Professor in the Department of Engineering Technology & Management at Ohio University in Athens, Ohio. He received his Ph.D. in Industrial Engineering from West Virginia University. He teaches courses in quality management systems, statistical quality control, and leadership. His research interests are in quality engineering, management, and the Deming management methods.
He has over 20 years of industrial experience as a quality engineer, corporate quality manager, and a consultant in quality management systems, statistical methods, and quality improvement. He facilitated Lean projects and mentored project leaders in Value Stream Mapping, Kaizen (A3) methodology, and 5S systems. Mustafa is a Certified Quality Engineer (CQE) and Six Sigma Black Belt (SSBB) by ASQ, and a certified QMS Principal Auditor by IRCA. He is also an ASQ Fellow since 2007.
