Greenbelt - "Measure" Tollgate Tools - Part 3

Wednesday, March 27, 2024

3:00 PM - 5:15 PM MST

About this event

In Lean Six Sigma, DMAIC is an acronym that represents the five phases of a process improvement methodology: Define, Measure, Analyze, Improve, and Control. Let's now focus on the "Measure" phase and we will also be reaching into the "Analyze" phase with our tool coverage.

We will be reviewing the following and there will be tool application as breakouts within the training:

  • Data Collection Plan: A data collection plan outlines the methodology and procedures for collecting data during a project. It includes details such as what data to collect, how to collect it, when to collect it, and who will collect it.
  • Cost of Poor Quality (COPQ): COPQ refers to the costs incurred as a result of producing defective or substandard products or services. It includes costs related to rework, scrap, warranty claims, customer complaints, and lost business opportunities.
  • DPU (Defects Per Unit): DPU is a metric used to measure the number of defects per unit produced. It helps organizations quantify the level of defects in their processes.
  • DPMO (Defects Per Million Opportunities): DPMO is another metric used to measure the level of defects in a process. It represents the number of defects per million opportunities for defects to occur.
  • FPY (First Pass Yield): FPY is the percentage of units that pass through a process successfully without requiring rework or correction.
  • TPY (Throughput Yield): TPY represents the percentage of units that successfully pass through an entire process without being scrapped or reworked.
  • RTY (Rolled Throughput Yield): RTY is the overall yield of a multi-step process, taking into account the yield of each individual step.
  • Cost Benefit Analysis: Cost benefit analysis is a systematic approach for evaluating the potential costs and benefits of a project or decision. It helps organizations determine whether the benefits of a project outweigh its costs.
  • ROI (Return on Investment): ROI is a measure used to evaluate the financial return on an investment. It is calculated by dividing the net profit generated by the investment by the initial investment cost and expressing the result as a percentage.
  • NPV (Net Present Value): NPV is a financial metric used to evaluate the profitability of an investment by calculating the present value of its expected future cash flows, discounted at an appropriate rate.
  • 7 Types of Waste (TIMWOOD): TIMWOOD is an acronym that stands for Transportation, Inventory, Motion, Waiting, Overproduction, Overprocessing, and Defects. These are the seven types of waste commonly identified in Lean manufacturing and process improvement.
  • Waste Walk: A waste walk is a structured approach for identifying and eliminating waste in a process. It involves physically walking through the process and observing activities to identify opportunities for improvement.
  • Risk Tool: Risk tools are techniques or methods used to identify, assess, and mitigate risks in a project or process. Examples include risk matrices, risk registers, and failure mode and effects analysis (FMEA).
  • Multi-voting: Multi-voting is a decision-making technique used to prioritize a list of options or ideas. Participants are given a limited number of votes to allocate to their preferred options, helping to identify the most favored choices.
  • Nominal Group Technique: The Nominal Group Technique is a structured brainstorming method used to generate ideas or solutions from a group of individuals. It involves a structured process of idea generation, discussion, and ranking to reach a consensus.
  • Meeting Rules and Etiquette: Meeting rules and etiquette refer to guidelines and principles that govern the conduct of meetings to ensure they are productive, respectful, and efficient. This includes things like starting and ending on time, staying focused on the agenda, allowing everyone to speak, and avoiding disruptions.

Overall, the Measurement Phase is critical for establishing a clear understanding of the current state of the process and laying the foundation for further analysis and improvement efforts in the Analyze and Improve Phases of the DMAIC methodology.

This clarity sets the stage for the subsequent phases of DMAIC, ensuring that the improvement efforts are focused on addressing the identified issues and delivering value to the customer.

As recommended reading and a potential study guide, we would like to present the following workbook:

This training will be presented by Kevin Lehigh and will be in a Zoom meeting format.

Kevin has 23+ years of consulting experience as a Sr. Consultant. He has focused on developing/implementing strategy management and operations-related projects in the aerospace, commercial and healthcare sectors.

Kevin is a Lean expert and Master Black Belt and has held these titles for multiple Fortune 500 companies.

He holds a BS degree in Engineering Physics for CSO, an MBA from Keller Business Schools of Management, and an MBA from Stanford University in Systems Engineering.

Once you have a paid registration for the training, you will receive your Zoom meeting invite. In addition, we will be sending out some pre-reading material for the training.

Thank you, we look forward to training with you.
