Applying ANOVA to Gauge R&R Analysis

There is increasing focus in automotive to utilize ANOVA to augment the typical Gauge R&R analysis.  Most quality professionals know the MSA Manual says that ANOVA can separate the interaction term between parts and appraisers.  But what does that exactly mean?  Is it good to have an interaction?  Bad?  Can the gauge fail the GRR due to the interaction term?

We will explore the underlying reasons of why ANOVA can be applied and clarify the assumptions used in the MSA.  We will examine multiple examples that exhibit a significant interaction term and compare them against examples that do not.  And we will discuss strategies to minimize the interaction term should that be determined necessary.

Mark Rusco is a tenured Associate Professor at Ferris State University where he teaches courses in the Manufacturing Engineering Technology program. Mark holds a Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering from Michigan State University and a Masters of Business Administration from Central Michigan University. He has 15 years of manufacturing experience as a Manufacturing Engineer, in Supplier Quality, and as the Quality Assurance Manager at a tier one supplier to the automotive industry. He has a background in powder metal technology, production grinding, metal stamping, production welding, and small assembly. To stay current with manufacturing trends, Mark consults with various area companies regarding SPC, Measurement System Analysis, GD&T, Designed Experiments, and other quality-related training.
