Data-Driven Approaches to Quality Control: An In-Person Presentation/Discussion

When:  Apr 9, 2024 from 05:00 PM to 07:30 PM (CT)
Associated with  Madison Section

Please register and join us in-person on April 9, 2024 when Ziqian Zheng, Ph.D. candidate in Industrial and Systems Engineering at University of Wisconsin-Madison, shares “Data-Driven Approaches to Quality Control."

Ziqian’s overall research goal is to deepen human comprehension of complex systems by establishing advanced data-driven methodologies.

The presentation will focus on two main topics while Ziqian shares his research experience and examples.

Process Monitoring: Techniques for continuous data collection from various processes and the immediate triggering of alerts upon detecting anomalies, based on the data. This topic has widespread applications in the real world, including manufacturing production, traffic surveillance, and patient health monitoring.

Degradation Modeling: Modeling the deterioration process of individual components within complex systems and predicting their remaining useful life. These predictions are vital across numerous applications. For instance, in the case of aircraft turbofans, it enables the scheduling of replacements or maintenance when the predicted useful life is nearing its end. Degradation modeling also aids in determining the optimal medical treatments for patients, showcasing its broad applicability and significance.

Ziqian Zheng is a final-year Ph.D. candidate in the Department of Industrial and Systems Engineering at the University of Wisconsin–Madison, Madison, WI, USA. He obtained his master’s degree in Statistics from the University of Wisconsin–Madison in 2023 and received his bachelor’s degree in Automation Engineering from Xi’an Jiaotong University in 2019.

His research focuses on data science for multimodal data analysis and inference to develop systematic data-driven methodologies for effective modeling, monitoring, prediction, and decision-making in complex systems. Those advanced methodologies enable (i) the identification of appropriate models to describe the system structures and dynamics, (ii) the integration of knowledge from multiple sources, (iii) the enhanced accuracy in assessing the system’s status, and (iv) the effective decision-making to elevate system productivity and performance. The research bridges the gaps in methodology among artificial intelligence, advanced statistics, system informatics, and bioinformatics. This interdisciplinary approach establishes strong connections with diverse application areas, including intelligent and connected systems, smart manufacturing, and computational biology.

In addition to his academic pursuits, Ziqian serves as the Vice President and Treasurer of the student chapter of the Society of Manufacturing Engineers in Madison.
