AIAG VDA Failure Mode & Effects Analysis (FMEA) Handbook – Is It Now the Standard?

In June of 2019, the AIAG VDA FMEA Handbook (“Handbook”) was published. Created by the Automotive Industry Action Group (AIAG) and the German Association of the Automotive Industry (VDA), the Handbook was supposed to harmonize the existing AIAG and VDA FMEA Manuals to create a standard for the use of FMEAs throughout the world’s automotive industry.
On December 11, 2019, the AIAG published a blog titled “AIAG ANNOUNCES OEM DEPLOYMENT PLAN FOR NEW AIAG & VDA FMEA HANDBOOK”. Perceived as the first step of the rollout of the Handbook as the worldwide automotive industry FMEA standard, the blog provided the following information on the actions currently being taken and planned for FCA, Ford, GM, and Honda:
1. FCA will allow the handbook for use on a “case for case” basis assuming an agreement was obtained before it’s use. FCA stated the handbook could be used for future programs sourced after December 2019.
2. Ford would immediately accept use of FMEAs using the handbook. Additionally, suppliers would be required to use the handbook on a per program basis with future programs starting with either the 2022 model year programs or commodities requiring a Functional Safety focus.
3. GM estimated they would begin implementing the handbook with programs beginning in calendar year 2023.
4. Honda estimated that on or around February 1, 2022, suppliers will be required to use the FMEA Handbook for new production processes, new production lines and new production parts. Honda expects all PFMEA documents be in the AIAG & VDA FMEA format by January 2027.
