September Chair's Message

By Robert Mitchell posted 09/07/23 12:50 PM

Greetings ASQ Phoenix Section Members

I hope this message finds you well and enjoying the long holiday weekend! I look forward to the Labor Day holiday weekend each year as it is a reminder that cooler weather and the days of opting outside are just around the corner. This week has offered a taste of things to come with much more pleasant temperatures. I can see day hikes, sand volleyball, and picnics on the horizon!

In the meantime, planning for PHXCON (the ASQ Phoenix Section Quality Conference) continues to move forward. The conference planning committee has selected a keynote speaker and has decided on several workshops. Dr. Adaora Nelson, Vice President of Quality and Mission Assurance at Raytheon, has been selected to speak on Organizational Excellence. I look forward to learning more about her impact at Raytheon and how she has shaped its quality initiatives. The Planning Committee is also pulling together a team of business leaders and HR professionals for a panel; discussion at the event to discus, "The Future of Quality in an Evolving Workplace".

Please be on the lookout for an announcement regarding workshops later this week; all offerings will be posted on the Phoenix Section’s myASQ website.

Robert Mitchell (Phoenix Section Immediate Past Chair) and I attended the ASU football game earlier this week to celebrate our Ted Thal Scholarship recipients. The Ira A. Fulton School of Engineering hosted donors and awardees in the Dean’s suite during the football game against Southern Utah. Bob and I had the pleasure of speaking with two of our three scholarship recipients, ‘HJ’ Hassonil Jones and Suresh Kondepudi, prior to the game delay caused by a massive haboob and rainstorm. Both students are extremely passionate about their studies in Chemical Engineering and Robotics, respectively, and are very appreciative of the scholarships provided by the ASQ Phoenix Section.

In our continuing focus to provide member value, the Phoenix Section has organized a community service project & networking event for November. We hope that you will join us on November 25th from 11:30 a.m. to 1:15 p.m. for a food packing event at Feed My Starving Children in Mesa. Feed My Starving Children provides ‘manna’ packs for malnourished children across the globe. Volunteers are tasked with creating and packing the food that will be shipped to participating countries. This event is open to Phoenix Section members as well as their guests. Following the packing event, a group networking lunch will be organized at a location nearby. Additional information regarding registration is forthcoming and will be communicated to you in your email via a Constant Contact invite.

I look forward to seeing you at our upcoming member meeting on September 14th which will have an in-person option at the Tower on Rio Salado College. Please check your email for additional details regarding in-person registration (via an event invitation through Constant Contact). A virtual option is also available.

Until we meet again, it is my hope that you will stay healthy, stay safe, and stay connected.

Cheers!

Hilary Werner
