Chair's Message - August 2023

By Robert Mitchell posted 07/30/23 06:23 PM

Greetings Valued ASQ Phoenix Section Members –

I hope each of you is finding ways to stay cool in this summer heat! The Valley of the Sun has certainly earned its nickname in July with the record streak of high temperatures above 110 and delayed onset of monsoon season. I remain hopeful that the moisture and somewhat cooler conditions that accompany the haboobs will not completely evade us this year. While I appreciate any storms that come our way during this season, I must say that I most look forward to those that produce heavy rainfall and absolutely spectacular light shows!

I am avoiding the heat by staying indoors much of the time, which has resulted in significant opportunities to plan events that will enhance your ASQ Phoenix Section member experience. Your volunteer Section Leadership Team (aka ‘Board’) is currently planning the first Phoenix section conference in over 20 years! This event – PHXCON 2023 – will be held in Tempe on November 2nd and 3rd of this year. A Call for Papers (presentations and workshops) and additional conference information have been posted to the section homepage on myASQ. Selected proposals will receive complimentary conference registration. Venue information is forthcoming and conference registration should be available within the next couple of weeks. We also invite sponsors and exhibitors. I encourage you to check in frequently as we are excited for you to see what we have in store!

I am also thrilled to announce that we will be implementing a Member Spotlight in our monthly newsletter! This article will feature Phoenix Section members who are selected from a pool of volunteers and will highlight their accomplishments as well as their hobbies. One individual will be highlighted each month, and the spotlight will ideally include their photo of choice and contact information. I am hopeful that this will increase member networking and engagement as we continue to transition in these post-Covid times. I am also optimistic that it will provide an opportunity for you to learn more about many of our amazingly talented members who have a penchant for flying under the radar! If you have an interest in participating in this initiative, please send an email to hwerner@memberleader.asq.org. I look forward to hearing from you!

As we continue to round out the section calendar for the remainder of the year, I encourage you to stay plugged in. Additional announcements regarding upcoming events like a community service project with Feed My Starving Children and a celebration of AZ Manufacturing Day (Oct 6) will be made at the program meeting on August 10th. I look forward to seeing you there and to sharing more with you about what is coming your way in the near future.

Until we meet next, please stay safe, stay healthy, and stay connected.

Cheers!

Hilary Werner
