Deploying DOE to identify vital factors that affect quality by Mark Anderson, Engineering Consultant with Stat-Ease, Inc.

If done properly, design of experiments (DOE) provides huge process improvements via small screening studies. Unfortunately, many quality engineers deploy designs such as Plackett-Burmans (PBs) that cannot resolve main effects from potential interactions. This talk will present more suitable experiment-designs for reliable identification of vital factors that affect quality.

Attendees will be greatly enlightened on the fine line of reliable screening at a minimum number of experimental runs. The pitfalls of PBs—these designs confounding main effects with two-factor interactions—will be illustrated definitively by example. Illustrating with case studies, the presenter will:

o   Provide a primer on experiment-design resolution

o   Flowchart a sequential strategy of experimentation for screening, characterization, optimization and ruggedness testing

o   Explain why Resolution III standard two-level factorials and Plackett-Burman designs, commonly recommended for screening, do not work very well for screening

o   Lay out the advantages of Resolution IV designs for power, reliability for screening and upside potential for revealing breakthrough interactions

o   Give a ‘heads-up’ to modern minimum-run screening designs.

Mark Anderson is an Engineering Consultant with Stat-Ease, Inc. Prior to joining the firm, he spearheaded an award-winning quality improvement program for an international specialty chemical manufacturer, generating millions of dollars in profit. He offers a diverse array of experience in process development, quality assurance and general management. Mark is also the lead author of three books:

• DOE Simplified: Practical Tools for Effective Experimentation, 3rd Edition,

• RSM Simplified: Optimizing Processes Using Response Surface Methods for Design of Experiments, 2nd Edition,

• Formulation Simplified: Finding the Sweet Spot through Design and Analysis of Experiments with Mixtures.

He has published numerous articles on design of experiments (DOE). Mark is also a guest lecturer at the University of MN Chemical Engineering & Materials Science department, the Ohio State University Fisher College of Business and South Dakota Mines Department of Chemical and Biological Engineering.

ANSI:G1 Designated Examiner Training 

Classes on: Mar. 13&14; Mar. 20&21, 2024

Registration is now open for training to earn a Designated Examiner certificate, issued by the ASQ Government Division.  This course is designed to train and prepare individuals as Designed Examiners who will be examining/evaluating various government operations using the ASQ/ANSI G1:2021 standard, entitled Guidelines for Quality of Government Operations and Services. 

The class is offered by webinar and is scheduled for five hours a day over four days, including March 13, 14, 20 and 21.  There is a $650 registration fee that includes all materials. 

The class includes five major sections of material, as follows:

   Workflows and structured system mapping

   Maturity modeling and scorecards

   System maturity scoring

   Process maturity scoring

   Organizational alignment and certification

The ASNI G1 standards have attained growing recognition since their introduction in March 2021, and are used by several courts within the Federal judiciary, a branch of ATF, and several Naval Warfare Centers.  Another group of local, state, and federal agencies have trained staff in the use of the new standard, as a new foundation for their quality initiatives. 

The standards provide an objective and uniform quality maturity scoring system, that evaluates managers on their use of well-known quality practices within the systems and processes they manage.  Through this formal review a visible scorecard can be provided to any organization or unit, showing its overall quality maturity practice.  The Government Division’s Center for Quality Standards in Government (CQSG)[1] can also formally review and certify quality maturity through follow-up evaluations conducted by certified Designated Examiners.  CQSG can award Bronze, Silver, and Gold Certificates to top performing organizations.  To date, two silver level certifications have been awarded.

Those who complete the training will earn a Designated Examiner certificate and will be able to review and score the quality practice of applicant organizations. 

The class requires a pre- and post-training exam, and a score of 70% or higher on the post-training exam for award of the Designated Examiner status. The trainer is Richard E. Mallory, MM, CQA, PMP, who was one of the lead authors in establishment of the standard. 

There are two professional pre-requisites to formal designation as follows:

1. Formal training and certification in quality science, or;  two years’ career experience in the application of quality science
2. Formal training or certification in Audit or Program Evaluation, such as the ASQ Certified Quality Auditor (CQA) designation, OR a minimum of two-years’ experience in the professional audit and/or operational review.

A fun take on the 5 Why’s.

The businessman and the fisherman

One day a fisherman was lying on a beautiful beach, with his fishing pole propped up in the sand and his solitary line cast out into the sparkling blue surf. He was enjoying the warmth of the afternoon sun and the prospect of catching a fish.

About that time, a businessman came walking down the beach, trying to relieve some of the stress of his workday. He noticed the fisherman sitting on the beach and decided to find out why this fisherman was fishing instead of working harder to make a living for himself and his family. “You aren’t going to catch many fish that way,” said the businessman to the fisherman.

“You should be working rather than lying on the beach!”

The fisherman looked up at the businessman, smiled and replied, “And what will my reward be?”

“Well, you can get bigger nets and catch more fish!” was the businessman’s answer. “And then what will my reward be?” asked the fisherman, still smiling. The businessman replied, “You will make money and you’ll be able to buy a boat, which will then result in larger catches of fish!”

“And then what will my reward be?” asked the fisherman again.

The businessman was beginning to get a little irritated with the fisherman’s questions. “You can buy a bigger boat, and hire some people to work for you!” he said.

“And then what will my reward be?” repeated the fisherman.

The businessman was getting angry. “Don’t you understand? You can build up a fleet of fishing boats, sail all over the world, and let all your employees catch fish for you!”

Once again the fisherman asked, “And then what will my reward be?”

The businessman was red with rage and shouted at the fisherman, “Don’t you understand that you can become so rich that you will never have to work for your living again! You can spend all the rest of your days sitting on this beach, looking at the sunset. You won’t have a care in the world!”

The fisherman, still smiling, looked up and said, “And what do you think I’m doing right now?”
