Presentation Title: Using PDSA, Designed Experiments & SPC Charts to Optimize 3D Printing Processes

Summary of presentation:

This presentation is a case study of applying the Deming’s Plan-Do-Study-Act (PDSA) cycle, Taguchi’s Experiments AND Shewhart’s Control Charts in performance optimization. The performance response variables are Quality-related (defects, dimension, etc.) and productivity-related (cycle time). The goal is to optimize quality while minimizing printing (cycle) time over the different types of materials used. This time the input variables under considerations include Wall Thickness, Printed Part Avoidance, Initial Layer Speed, Infill Pattern, as well as zooming in on Infill Percentage and Layer Height.  Recycled  material vs. Original material will be used as the noise factor.

Takeaways from this study include:

  • Dr. Deming, Dr. Taguchi, and Dr. Shewhart provide us with great guidance – if we are willing to learn from them.
  • Quality techniques like Designed Experiments, and SPC can work well together, especially when sequenced effectively –being        guided by the teachings of the masters.
  • Just doing the experiments is not enough. Even if you get your best values in the best conditions, you still might have special          causes entering over time.   As you implement the SPC, you want to watch for special causes.

About the Speakers

Dan Finizio

Dan Finizio is a student from Connecticut in his senior year majoring in Engineering Technology & Management at the Russ College of Engineering & Technology of Ohio University.
