About the presenter:
Dr. Deborah Stine is the Founder of the Science & Technology Policy Academy and a Senior Fellow with Innovate US, whose mission is to improve lives by enabling public service professionals to deliver more effective and equitable policies and services. Her passion is helping experts and their organizations play a role in addressing society’s challenges and opportunities. She does this through keynote speaking, workshops, coaching, policy analysis, program evaluation, and community engagement.
Previously, she served in the Obama White House as Executive Director of the President’s Council of Advisors on Science and Technology, a Science & Technology Specialist at the Congressional Research Service, a study director at the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine, and as a professor of the practice in engineering and public policy at Carnegie Mellon University.
Dr. Stine was elected a Fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science "For her major, long-term contributions to national science and technology policy and the development of the science and technology policy workforce of the future." She received a Carnegie Science Communication award for her ability to explain complex scientific and technical information to policymakers and the public.
Her 2024 book, From Expertise to Impact: A Practical Guide to Informing and Influencing Public Policy, demystifies the process of influencing policy decisions, offering a roadmap for scientists and engineers through the journey of leveraging their scientific and technical expertise to make a tangible difference in science and technology policy for societal benefit.
She has a BS in mechanical and environmental engineering, an MBA, and a Ph.D. in public policy analysis and public administration. Dr. Stine is certified as a coach by the International Coaching Federation. She is based in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, USA.
