ASQ-MQD Mastering Metrology Tutorial #4 of 8
Title: The Calibration Trifecta: Micrometers, Calipers & Height Gages Demystified
Abstract:
This technical webinar course, The Calibration Trifecta: Micrometers, Calipers & Height Gages Demystified, provides a comprehensive, standards-based approach to calibrating key dimensional instruments: outside micrometers, inside micrometers, depth micrometers, calipers, and height gages. Designed for calibration technicians, metrology professionals, and quality system auditors, the session emphasizes traceability, uncertainty, and procedural alignment with current national standards.
Participants will learn to calibrate micrometers in accordance with ASME B89.1.13-2013 (R2022), covering spindle movement, anvil flatness, zero setting, and full-range verification for outside, inside, and depth configurations. The tutorial then transitions to ASME B89.1.14-2018 (R2023) for caliper calibration, including vernier, dial, and digital types. Key topics include jaw parallelism, scale accuracy, and repeatability across measurement ranges. Finally, the session addresses calibration of height gages—vernier, dial, and digital—using procedures outlined in 33K6-4-1626-1, with emphasis on vertical alignment, slider movement, and reference standard selection.
Throughout the tutorial, learners will engage with practical demonstrations, calibration templates, and uncertainty estimation techniques. Special attention is given to environmental controls, equipment handling, and documentation practices that support ISO/IEC 17025:2017 compliance. Participants will also explore common sources of error, corrective actions, and best practices for integrating calibration data into quality management systems.
By the end of the session, participants will be equipped to:
· Perform accurate calibrations of micrometers, calipers, and height gages to applicable standards
· Document calibration results with traceability and uncertainty budgets
· Evaluate instrument condition and measurement reliability
· Align dimensional calibration practices with ISO/IEC 17025 and customer requirements
This tutorial reinforces the importance of precision, stewardship, and technical integrity in dimensional metrology, empowering professionals to uphold measurement confidence in regulated and high-performance environments.
