Saturday, 17 February 2024, 11:00 a.m.- 12:00 noon
Gadsby's Tavern Museum Ranger Outing Event
134 N. Royal Street / Alexandria, Virginia 22314 / Phone: 703.746.4242
Followed by optional Networking Lunch at Gadsby's Tavern Restaurant
The Tour: ASQ Section 0511 is pleased to have arranged a guide for a one-hour private tour of the Gadsby's Tavern History Museum, followed by an on-site networking lunch at Gadsby's tavern itself.
The tour explores the power of the new Republic and its impact on people, providing a glimpse into life in the fledgling country across race, gender, and social status.
The Venue: Two early American tavern buildings, to include the 1785 tavern and the 1792 City Tavern and Hotel. Named for Englishman John Gadsby, tavern operator from 1796 to 1808, the tavern businesses were central to Alexandria's port-based economy of dining, entertainment, and lodging. Notable patrons that enjoyed this hospitality included George and Martha Washington, Thomas Jefferson, and the Marquis de Lafayette. A large enslaved labor force made Gadsby's renowned hospitality possible.
Getting There: On-street parking is available on North Royal, on nearby residential streets, and metered street and garage parking available throughout Old Town Alexandria. Please be aware that parking regulations are strictly enforced. The nearest Metro stop is King Street, accessed by the Blue and Yellow Lines. It's about a mile walk to the tavern from the station; alternatively, the city provides a free trolley service and commercial transportation (taxi, Uber, or Lyft) is also available.
This tour will be led by two guides provided by the museum exclusively for our group. Late registration is open with 4 tickets left. Late registration will close 2/14/24 at noon, or when the 4 tickets are sold. The tour will start promptly at 11 a.m., so please plan ahead, accounting for parking in Old Town and the walk to the museum.
Note on parking: We were told Market Street Parking Garage at 108 N. Fairfax will cost a flat $5.00.
