This presentation reviews common Cost of Quality (COQ) models, including Prevention, Appraisal, and Failure (PAF); Process Cost Model (PCM); Taguchi Loss Function; and Activity-Based Costing (ABC). It discusses the benefits of implementing COQ models in business through an example and evaluates cost-quality relationships and explores the balance between cost and quality for financial efficiency. Additionally, this presentation explores the impact of quality on non-quality aspects of business and introduces the concept of indirect COQ, outlines its items, significance, and challenges. Furthermore, the presentation briefly introduces the Total COQ model, which integrates indirect COQ for a comprehensive approach to Quality Management and initiates a discussion on applying Total COQ model.

Dr. Herman Tang is a distinguished professor in the School of Engineering at Eastern Michigan University. He has taught nine graduate courses on quality management and has overseen the Master of Science in Quality Management program and Graduate Certificate in Lean Six Sigma since 2015. Prior to joining EMU, he accumulated over 16 years of experience in vehicle assembly manufacturing at Chrysler (now known as Stellantis). Dr. Tang has authored five technical books, including Quality Planning and Assurance ‒ Principles, Approaches, and Methods for Product and Service Development by Wiley. He holds a doctoral degree in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Michigan–Ann Arbor and an MBA in Industrial Management from Baker College. He serves as the Treasurer for ASQ’s Ann Arbor Section and an SME of Content Management Committee of QMD. He can be reached out at htang2@emich.edu.
