Summary of presentation:In this presentation, Bill will provide an overview of Dr. Deming’s teachings and philosophies and conduct a simulation using the Red Square Puzzles.
Dr. W. Edwards Deming was a renowned statistician, professor, author, lecturer, and consultant who made significant contributions to the field of quality management. His teachings are centered around improving business processes and organizational efficiency through a holistic approach known as the
System of Profound Knowledge. Here are some key aspects of his teachings:
This system consists of four interrelated parts:
- Appreciation for a system: Understanding the organization as a system and recognizing interdependencies.
- Knowledge of variation: Understanding variation in processes and how to manage it.
- Theory of knowledge: Using the scientific method to learn and improve.
- Psychology: Understanding human behavior and motivation.
We will also conduct Dr. W. Edwards Deming's
Red Square Puzzle Simulation which is an interactive exercise designed to illustrate the importance of teamwork and systems thinking in problem-solving and highlight the importance of “We” vs “Me” thinking.
PurposeThe simulation aims to demonstrate how working together as a cohesive system can lead to better outcomes compared to working in isolation. It emphasizes the concept of
"thinking together" and how collaboration can uncover hidden barriers and improve overall performance.
Key Lessons
- Teamwork: The exercise highlights the importance of teamwork and how effective communication and collaboration can lead to successful outcomes.
- Systems Thinking: Participants learn to view the puzzle as part of a larger system, understanding how each individual's actions impact the overall performance.
- Continuous Improvement: The simulation encourages participants to continuously improve their processes and find better ways to work together
