May 20, 1875, was an important day in the world for standardization of measurements. It was on this day 17 nations (including the United States) signed the Metre Convention Treaty. This year we celebrate the 150th anniversary of that remarkable moment. We take measurements for granted and everything works fine due to the consistency of measurements across the globe (and across space too!!). Before standardization, many challenges faced conducting trade between countries and scientific research. This presentation provides you with important milestones that lead to this event and what has transpired since then that had led us to the definition (and redefinition) of the 7 International System (SI) base units of measurements: metre (m), kilogram (kg), second (s), candela (cd), kelvin (K), ampere (A) and the mole (mol). How we can ensure fair trade, advance scientific discovery and address global challenges will be discussed.
Join Past Chair and ASQ Fellow, Dilip Shah, as we celebrate the 150th anniversary of the signing of the Treaty of the Meter and honor its impact on the world & universe.
