ASQ Section 0511 June 2024 Meeting Announcement

Short Description:

Across the last half-decade, the trust in Boeing from the flying public has dropped significantly. Boeing's gap in market share with rival European aircraft manufacturer Airbus, a direct competitor, has widened considerably following fewer orders and deliveries per year.

Boeing's current position has been attributed to several factors, including poor quality control, a race to secure profits and more. Analysts and former employees pin the decline on the company's culture, which has created a schism between management and employees on the factory floor for some time — the 737-9 crisis being only the latest symptom of the continuing problem.

Program Content:

Jeff will led the discussion using publicly available information. This will be an interactive discussion, with quality experts asked to give their opinions on the problems and ways to resolve them.

Speaker Background:

Jeffrey Parnes is currently retired. His product assurance career started 50 years ago when he became a Quality Assurance Trainee for the Defense Contract Administration Services (DCAS). As a Defense Logistics Agency (DLA) employee his responsibilities included wood products, computer software, statistics and Defense Supply Center operations. In the private segment he served as a computer scientist for Computer Sciences Cooperation on the Peace Shield Project working with Boeing as a subcontractor, with Hughes Training Corporation as both a software quality manager and configuration manager on a variety of trainers, with Advanced Communications Systems as support for Space and Naval Warfare Systems Command (SPAWAR), with Orion Scientific supporting the Defense intelligence Agency (DIA), with Planning Research Corporation/Northrop Grumman supporting multiple computer and hardware system deployments, with Electronic Data Systems supporting the Federal Reserve, with Unisys supporting multiple computer system deployments, with ITT supporting the FAA's Automatic Dependent Surveillance — Broadcast (ADSB) systems deployment, with Maximus supporting nationwide health care systems, and with various contractors supporting Department of Veterans Affairs system deployments  

Jeff has been a member of ASQ Section 0511 since its formation in 1983, having joined ASQC in 1979. He has served multiple terms as the section's Treasurer and Chair, and has maintained the ASQ0511 website since before 2007. He is also a board member of the Configuration Management Working Group of Metropolitan Washington.

This will be Jeff's second presentation to the membership, previously presenting in pandemic times. Presenting to the section is a family affair, his son Adam previously presenting in the teens, and his wife Daria schedule to present next month.  He's trying to convince his daughter to brief the membership on quality in the emergency room.
