Is November World Quality Month?
World Quality Month provides a platform for acknowledging efforts and accomplishments of quality professionals.. A time to celebrate and showcase quality contributions in businesses, communities, and institutions.  This opportunity to show our collective passion for quality and raise the voice of quality worldwide.
Has ASQ forgotten to celebrate World Quality Month ?

I believe that ASQ dropped World Quality Month.

They also dropped the Country Counselors last June.

Don't know if we dropped being "The Global Voice of Quality" yet.  From what I remember, you can see across Lake Michigan from the ASQ HQ Building, so that's something.
Yes, I was disappointed to see this not supported last year.

I'm relatively new to Quality. What has World Quality Month generally looked like in practice? I saw the posters and what not in years past, but wasn't sure what I should be doing as the the sole quality personnel for my company.
Dear Amanda,

In the 90's Corporate wanted to give me different souvenirs with the company's logo on it for Quality month. I requested instead for a budget of $5,000. (That was the cost of the souvenirs).

The question is what is the objective, how do you want to accomplish it and what were the results...

Over the course of several Quality Month programs... the things I experimented with were,
1. I had the Quality Policy Printed on a nice sheet of A0 paper and had everyone sign it and had it framed & mounted where everyone could see it.
2. We had a secret ballot where everyone had one vote for who they thought exemplified Quality with prizes of Ist $300, 2nd $200, 3rd $100
3. A poster competition to on what Quality meant in the products we were making again with the same prizes
4. Suggestion Scheme Competition on how we could improve our Quality with prizes
5. Project competition with prizes

Good excuse to create some excitement for the staff with extrinsic rewards and some hidden ones too... to remind them on how they should be embracing Quality... The projects produced significant savings...

I don't know whether a Booker prize Book of the year and its critique would work for you as one of the incentives to make them read and critique and be judged by the Managers... or even a critique of the ISO standards and how it may be applied to your clients... but I hope you get my drift on how to motivate them and present a doable challenge to up their game... if the opportunity presents itself... because from the previous posts it seems to have been passed on the wayside perhaps for being too cliche...

I took the opportunity of requesting the budget and I hope you will get an opportunity like that to experiment too...  I hope Herzberg's intrinsic motivation comes to mind when you are given the opportunity.

Yours sincerely,
Ernest

Ernest Phoon‍, wow I have a lot to learn.
Dear Amanda,

The same goes for me...

The quote I find that motivates me to keep on learning is "The more you know...the less you know" which when I searched showed me the full proverb

"The lesser you sleep, the more you know, The less you know, the faster you fall asleep"

The light has thrown a whole new perspective on life to ponder on...

Yours sincerely,
Ernest

Ernest Phoon‍, well, I always thought it was a good thing that I have no trouble falling asleep and staying asleep. Now I'm not so sure. I'm not sure I'm ready to roll out major Quality Month programs this November, but I think I will read up on ideas for next year. I doubt I could get much of any budget, but I'm sure I could figure out something to inspire my company. If you have any more feel free to share!

I really liked World Quality Month.

At one company, I was responsible for World Quality Month and we would arrange some special training sessions but also have fun:
- Kid's coloring contest
- Wear your favorite team colors
- Chili Cookoff with a giant spoon travelling trophy rotated to that year's winner

Sometimes there was a theme from ASQ but mostly we would decide a theme and make materials up using the logos and graphics.  One thing we would hand out was a business card sized folding tent with the World Quality Month graphics and the company's quality mission (in the different langues for our global divisions too).  The folding tent made it super easy for people to recite the company's quality mission when the ISO auditors came around - ha!

Even if ASQ does not support it any more, I still recommend that you do it yourself, maybe by celebrating World Quality Day that takes place every year on the second Thursday of November.

Dan Burrows‍, those are some fun and totally doable ideas. I think I could even start this November with those!
I just have a 3rd party Audit ISO 13485:2016 in November, but still, I'll try to make something because it's totally worthy. Many ideas here are excellent to implement!

We have an ISO 9001:2015 audit that month, but I agree.

Scheduling ISO Audits during World Quality Month???

I thought you were trying to make it fun - ha!

One idea that I suggested once was that all Quality Managers, Quality Engineers, and Quality Inspectors take November off and let the factory ship as much product out the door as they could.  Might make for a nice Quality Month but then a year of quality recalls - ha!

Usually our audit is in October, but this year we trouble scheduling it. Maybe the auditor will like to be part of the Quality month celebration! Ha ha.

Too funny on your month-off idea. I guess that would be one way to emphasize the importance of Quality personnel. Coming back to a nightmare would negate the time off, though.
So is there a Quality Month or not?

I have been aware of the practice for several years although I can't say that any company or section that I knew really did anything.   This year as Section Chair in Phoenix I thought well now I can bring it up.  However not having seen anything from ASQ about it I thought maybe I should do some research to double check.   This looks like the only reference to it in discussions but I also see the Blue Ridge section is doing something.  So do we still celebrate Quality Day in November or is just every day should be Quality Day?  smiley

David Gibson‍ it appears World Quality Month has gone by the wayside. World Quality Day still exists, but is not sponsored or promoted by ASQ any longer.
CQI is the sponsor and here is the information I found when planning for my organization https://www.quality.org/world-quality-day-2018. I am planning a little observance for my company, what do you intend to do?

ASQ dropped support of World Quality Month last year with no notice.

Sad to see it go since a lot of folks were doing some instructive and fun things.

Dan Burrows‍ I'm just participating anyway. I figured I didn't need to give it up just because ASQ isn't supporting it any more.
Ok thanks for the information.   At least some of us are still thinking about this.
Hello Chaitanya Baliga‍ , David Gibson‍ , Amanda Foster‍  , Dan Burrows‍  , Marcelo Favale‍  , Ernest Phoon‍ , and Jennifer Stepniowski‍ and thank you for raising the awareness of Quality Month from the grassroots.

I was always very proud of the global aspirations of ASQ, as reflected in the attached policy.  I would also like to congratulate the new Regional Directors who are from outside of USA and Canada.  Congratulations to Nancy Nouaimeh‍  and Edwin Garro‍ and thank you for your efforts to promote ASQ Globally. I hope that the GCC will select a global member to the 2019 BoD as one of its representatives, to effectively represent the particular concerns of our international ASQ membership.

There should never be an Off Switch on Quality, so we don't need to confine our efforts to November. We should also promote Quality, not just as its own end state, but also as a complementary multiplier of other functional disciplines.  Quality enhances the effectiveness of design, production, maintenance, service, education, technology, and organizational excellence.
