I'm beginning to map the entire process chain for our small machine shop. I've started with a basic swim lane in Visio. Next I will have the team develop the more detailed map on large drafting paper with stocky notes. Any ideas, suggestions?
Steven - the map looks good to me, although I can't read it. When you go to the next level, consider marking the steps where you have a control point. When I've done really detailed maps, it's been helpful to see which steps control for risk or quality with a different color. If you have an eye to redesigning the process at some stage, you will already have marked the key areas not to break.
Looks good. You can have categories (both vertical & horizontal - say roles and major activities) OR color code roles/functions like sales, operation etc.
