In February 2020, COVID-19 molecular diagnostic testing was non-existent in the Mayo Arizona microbiology lab. Soon, however, it became our most in-demand test, increasing the overall test count in our laboratory by over 300%. Samples were processed and tested 24 hours a day, seven days a week in order to meet the demand. Supply shortages and hiring limitations were a frequent reality. The laboratory assessed the workflow and testing process continuously in order to identify the most efficient utilization of its limited resources. This presentation reviews how the use of lean principles, with a focus on waste (muda) elimination allowed us to meet our 24 hour turnaround time, even as our demand skyrocketed. We will step through the DMAIC (Define, Measure, Analyze, Improve, Control) process, presenting tools such as process maps, spaghetti diagrams and effort/impact graphs, followed by a summary of the lessons we learned in handling demand in a fast evolving, high pressure process.
