The Presentation:
In June of 2019, the AIAG combined with the VDA and published the AIAG VDA FMEA Handbook. In January of 2021, the SAE published SAE J1739TM JAN2021 FMEA Standard, which was a revision to the SAE J1739 JAN2009 FMEA Standard. Since the AIAG FMEA 3rd Edition FMEA manual was published in July of 2001, the current version of the AIAG FMEA manual has been the technical equivalent of the current version of the SAE J1739 FMEA. This is no longer the case.
The purpose of this presentation is as follows:
  1. Provide an overview of the history behind the two Design FMEA methodologies
  2. Provide an explanation of the core fundamentals of the AIAG VDA Design FMEA methodology
  3. Provide an explanation of the core fundamentals of the SAE J1739TM JAN2021 Design FMEA methodology
  4. Provide an explanation of the core elements of an effective Design FMEA
  5. Using the core elements of an effective Design FMEA as a baseline, provide an assessment of the effectiveness and efficiency of the two different Design FMEA methodologies

About the Presenter:
Richard Harpster is president of Harpco Systems Inc., which he founded in 1987. Harpco Systems specializes in providing software, training, and consulting for Risked Based Product Lifecycle Management® (Risk Based PLM®). Over the past 33 years, Richard has helped numerous companies implement improved design and manufacturing systems on a wide variety of products from autonomous vehicles to molecular assays to detect diseases such as Prostate Cancer and HIV.  He is a recognized expert in the application of Failure Mode and Effects Analysis and invented several new concepts including the linking of Design FMEAs to Process FMEAs which became an automotive industry standard in 2008, eighteen years after he first introduced the concept to Ford Motor Company Climate Control Division. His inventions in the field of Risk Based PLM® include Requirements Risk Assessment™ (RRA™), Multiple Integrated Cause Analysis (MICA™) and Rapid Integrated Problem Solving (RIPS®). His latest invention is Easy AIAG VDA™, which allows companies to create AIAG VDA FMEA Handbook compliant Design FMEAs and Process FMEAs. The method is 300% to 400% faster than any other method capable of creating AIAG VDA compliant Design and Process FMEAs in existence. Easy AIAG VDA™ is also simple without the need to attend two-day Design FMEA classes for both the Design FMEA and Process FMEA.
Prior to starting Harpco Systems, Richard spent 14 years at Ford Motor in a wide variety of positions including Senior Design Engineer, Superintendent of Plant Maintenance, and Plant Manager. His education includes a B.S.E.E. from Penn State University, M.S.E.E from the University of Detroit, and an M.B.A. from Eastern Michigan University. Richard is a registered professional engineer in the State of Michigan.
