Machine Learning and Statistics: Similarities and Differences

Abstract:
There is philosophical debate about these two professions. This talk will help us see differences and similarities as the speaker discusses a scenario in how a statistician and a machine learning engineer might tackle the same problem using their different approaches and philosophies.

Speaker Bio: Alex Gutman: BS & MS in Mathematics, PhD in Applied Mathematics (Statistics). He is an accredited professional statistician by the American Statistical Association. Alex has a passion for data science, Machine learning and AI. He is a trainer in R, Statistics, Machine Learning, Automated ML and author of “Becoming a Data Head”. His past employers include P&G, 84:51, Kroger, Air Force Institute of Technology and recently back to P&G. His career journeys have seen him transition from an industrial statistician to a professor and ML/AI engineer. He brings a unique perspective to the table to discuss this topic.

Presentation 2:
AI & Machine Learning Project Selection at Eastman

Abstract: In the digital age, the use of AI and advanced Machine Learning techniques is critical to maintain product quality and maximize the efficiency of Manufacturing processes. However, AI/ML is a tool that is only useful when applied to the correct problem. Recognizing what makes a project suitable for an AI/ML solution is the first step towards successfully implementing that solution. In this presentation, you will learn how to identify good AI/ML project candidates and see problems that have been solved with AI/ML solutions at Eastman.

Speaker Bio: Bryce Curtsinger is a data scientist at Eastman. He has held this role since graduating from the University of Tennessee in 2018. He holds both a Bachelor and Master of Science in Business Analytics. His role at Eastman has allowed him to apply Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning algorithms in a number of areas, including manufacturing, product development, HR, sales, and digital products.

Bryce lives in Knoxville, TN with his wife Ellie. In his free time, he enjoys fishing, experimenting in the kitchen, and tabletop gaming.
