Abstract:
On Thursday, May 19th, Gene Abbey will join us at TechWorks! to present the provision from Link of mission simulators from Mercury thru Skylab as well as USAF Dyna Soare (X-20). The discussion will be especially rare because Gene not only worked with Link beginning in the late 1950s but Link’s Lunar Landing Command Module Trainer is on display at TechWorks!

Learn about our local tie to training the personnel who would be early American space pioneers as well as other critical systems and hardware.
Bio: After nearly 7 years of interrupted service in the US Marine Corps from 1945 to 1952, Gene completed a BSEE in 1956 while working at GMC Truck & Coach Division in the electrical engineering lab. He was the co-inventor of the automotive alternator.
After graduating, Gene moved to Link where he worked until 1989. There, he started as a Field Engineer and quickly advanced to System Engineer doing engine simulation design and aerodynamic simulation. Promotions continued and he became Engineering General Department Manager and Program Manager on the B-747, the Gemini Space Craft simulator, and the Apollo/ LEM. He next became Product Line Manager for Nuclear Power Plant Simulation; and finally, Director of Research and Development. During his time there, Gene was involved in the space program from the start of manned flight, starting with the Air Force Dayna-Soar program, building a simulator for that program, although that program did not evolve much beyond the prototype stage. The Mercury trainer was cobbled up from a link Air Force F-106 fighter simulator and continued through on the SkyLab.
Gene left Link in 1989 to start up Binghamton Simulator Company where he continued to work through 2000. After leaving Binghamton Simulator, he then worked as an Engineering Consultant through 2011.
