SIPOC – The Unsung Hero of Lean Six Sigma

SIPOC (Supplier Input Process Output Customer) is one of the most underutilized tools in the Lean Six Sigma toolkit. While some organizations require a SIPOC for every LSS project, kaizen event, or A3 activity that they do, others rarely use them. SIPOC diagrams are useful for accomplishing at least three critical problem solving activities: scoping the process, identifying the key stakeholders, and identifying the process metrics. In this session you will see how SIPOC is applied to manufacturing as well as transactional processes. Examples will be included from the manufacturing, service, non-profit, and education sectors.
Eric Hayler
Lean Six Sigma Master Black Belt

Eric Hayler is the Principal of the Hayler Group and a Lean Six Sigma Master Black Belt. He has led Continuous Improvement efforts at BMW Manufacturing and Amazon. Previously he was the head of BMW’s Central Laboratory, and the Analytical Laboratory Manager in the Research and Development department of the Engineered Minerals Division of the JM Huber Corporation. Eric is a graduate of Rutgers University and holds a PhD in Solid State Inorganic Chemistry.

Eric was the 2017 ASQ (American Society for Quality) Chair of the Board of Directors. He has served as ASQ Past Chair, Chair-Elect, ASQ Treasurer, co-chair of the Global Advisory Committee, on the ASQ Board of Directors, as well as a member of the Board of Examiners for the South Carolina Governor’s Quality Award.

Eric is an Adjunct Professor of Business Analytics at the University of South Carolina Upstate in Spartanburg, SC and has been Adjunct Professor of Chemistry at Mercer University in Macon, GA. He has served on the Executive Committee of the Board of Trustees of the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges, the regional body for the accreditation of degree-granting higher education institutions in the Southern states.
