Fisher Contracting Repairs of US-10 and M-30 Bridges in Midland, MI after 500-year Flood and Dam Failures

Topic:
On May 19, Midland County and the surrounding area was inundated with flood waters as heavy rainfall and two subsequent dam failures took place over the course of just a couple days.  The news of the severe 500-year flooding made National headlines.  Two critical roadways, one US Highway 10 and one state highway M-30 were washed out during the floods, compounding the logistical issues of responding to the flood.
The Michigan Department of Transportation awarded an emergency contract to repair the damage from flooding at the US-10 bridges over Sanford Lake in Midland County.  A Midland firm, Fisher Contracting, was the low bidder at $1.78M.  Crews from Fisher have begun work, less than four full days after the flooding occurred.  U.S. 10 is a vital commercial corridor in the region.  Work was completed by mid-June.
On June 29, a $1.4 million contract to begin debris removal for two bridge locations on the M-30 trunkline began (over the Tittabawassee and Tobacco Rivers). Debris removal included trees, roots, bridge fragments and other materials washed down the river during the flood, MDOT stated. Fisher also stabilized the west slope of the bridge and armored the riverbed bottom and piers with riprap.
Work began for a second $1.2 million emergency contract on Aug 3. MDOT stated between 8,000 and 11,000 vehicles used the roadway on a daily basis.  After four months of reconstruction work organized between MDOT and Midland-based Fisher Contracting, the section of M-30 over the Tittabawassee River in Edenville was reopened to traffic on Sept. 18.  Fisher is also in process of repairing a segment of M-30 over the Tobacco River also damaged in the flood.
