Message from the Chair – September 2020
At the end of the day, the goals are simple: safety and security.”

Welcome Back My Friends!!
I hope you enjoyed our beautiful Michigan summer and are ready to return to another year of quality Knowledge – Networking – Opportunities provided by your fresh and local Grand Rapids Section.  It seems strange to say “return” in the COVID era.  In past years, we would prepare to return to school, return to Fall work schedules and resume football programs with the eternal hope the Detroit Lions would make it to the Super Bowl.  It is also the time of year we resume our section program year.
The Grand Rapids Section 2020-2021 program year begins on a familiar note, Mark Rusco kicks off the season discussing “Linearity of Measurement Instruments.”  This will be a Face to Face meeting, similar to our normal monthly meetings of the past; however, the following precautions have been put into place to help keep the attendees safe and healthy.
  • Everyone has to wear a mask at all times, except when eating.
  • Increased the spacing between tables to 6 feet.
  • Increased the spacing at each table to a maximum of 4 people per table.
  • Dinner will be served family style.
  • There are hand sanitizers around the room.
  • The Bluff has deep cleaned the entire facility.
The Bluff and the Section Leadership Committee (SLC) have worked together to assure a safe meeting environment.  The decision to hold a Face to Face meeting was not made lightly, but the SLC knows the in-person monthly meetings are one of the primary benefits of our section.  The SLC also knows there are members that will not attend a Face to Face meeting and is working on virtual options.  Last May & June, the section hosted successful Zoom Meetings and is actively working on the ability to live stream the monthly meetings, certification preparation classes and workshops.  The SLC sees this virtual capability as a fundamental and necessary tool going forward.

Our member’s health and safety are our number one priority.  If you feel uncomfortable attending a Face to Face meeting for any reason, please do not feel pressured to attend the meeting.

If you exhibit any of the following symptoms, please do not attend the meeting.
  • Fever or chills
  • Cough
  • Shortness of breath or difficulty breathing
  • Fatigue
  • Muscle or body aches
  • Headache
  • New loss of taste or smell
  • Sore throat
  • Congestion or runny nose
  • Nausea or vomiting
  • Diarrhea

The lineup for the program year starting in September promises to be a good one; including a much-requested plant tour and a distinguished panel of industry leaders and experts discussing COVID-19.  Please watch your mail for the program post card and take this opportunity to confirm your email and postal addresses are current in your ASQ profile to assure you receive this important information.
The Grand Rapids Section Leadership Committee is pleased to offer meetings and maintain communication to provide you member value during this challenging time.  Please join us September 10th as we pursue Excellence Through Quality and we encourage anyone interested in getting involved with the leadership committee to make your interest known.  The SLC would like to thank you for being active members of our great section and I look forward to seeing you again.

Stay Safe,
Ken Phillips
