Message from the Chair – November 2019
“For everything there is a season, a time for every activity under heaven.”
                                                                              Ecclesiastes 3:1
As the seasons are slowing turning to colder weather; I am taking a moment to reflect on this being my last official invitation as Chair for ASQ GR Section 1001 members to join me for our upcoming event.  It has been my honor and privilege to serve you all as Chair these last two years and am very grateful for the support experienced in that time.  I pray that my tenure has presented an enhancement to your time as a member of our great section and that the improvements we have experienced together have been valuable.  The experiences over the last two years were not been a solo race as I am fortunate to have been able to work alongside a great group of volunteers in our Section Leadership Committee.  My goal over the last few months has been to ensure my successor comes into a smooth transition with continuation of team pursuit for excellence.  Know that I look forward to stories of success greater than those realized during my tenure.  Without making this too sappy; I wanted to state how thankful I am for the opportunity to have served you and make it clear that I appreciate all that have supported.  Thank you!

Reminders for those that have participated in recent events and a heads up to those joining us anew…you must sign up for ASQ Grand Rapids Section 1001 events via Eventbrite; which can be done directly by visiting their website at and searching for ASQ in Grand Rapids.  I also encourage you to stay tuned in with ASQ GR Section 1001 via our website (you will need to log in to see events calendar); as well as, through our Facebook & LinkedIn connections.

I was unable to attend our last event “October ASQ Presents”; however, our great team made certain that the evening carried on with the level of presentation that you have come to expect.  Thank you to Arvind Srivastava for presenting to our group about Calibrating Humans: How to do attribute agreement analysis (AAA); we appreciate you stepping in to cover the event and sharing valuable knowledge.

You will not want to miss out on our ASQ Presents in November as there will be much to engage with.
  • First of all we are formally voting on the slate of candidates to assign our elected officers; and will learn about our process for preparing members for nomination to Fellow status.
  • Our keynote speaker is back by popular demand from his Innovation presentation two years ago!  Dave Verduyn will be presenting on “Inventive Thinking in the Front End of Product Development” – during which you will gain valuable insight into how inventive thinking and innovation are linked.
  • Last, but not least…this is our give back to the community opportunity.  One of the areas that we take pride in as members of ASQ GR Section 1001 is our ability to make a difference in our community.  This year we were presented with an option of give back that is a twofold blessing.  As we celebrate Veteran’s in the month of November; we found a means for us to go beyond a thank you and engage in a local to Grand Rapids endeavor that is geared towards honoring local Hero’s fallen in the line of duty.  Monies are being raised to re-locate a monument dedicated to the memory of Marines from Marine Corps reserve unit, Alpha Company, 1st Battalion, 24th Marine Regiment.  Our section leadership team has voted to match donations raised during our November event to go towards this charity event; which not only honors Veterans but keeps sight on community support in Grand Rapids.  We will be sharing more details during the announcements portion of our meeting; please come prepared to donate cash or check for this cause.  Thank you in advance for your support!

We have much to be thankful for as a Section and as a community; November’s ASQ Presents will offer the venue to enjoy time together as Quality Professionals and Friends.  The Section Leadership Committee and I look forward to seeing you on Thursday, November 14th for the opportunity to enhance your career by venue of Knowledge – Networking – Opportunities!
