Job Description
The Institutional Planning, Integration, and Development (IPID) organization aligns NREL strategy with investments in core capabilities, continuous improvements, and communications and engagement.

The Performance Assurance Specialist is responsible for supporting a wide range of activities associated with the Performance Assurance Team including the Contractor Assurance, Assessment Management, and Continuous Improvement programs.
This individual will primarily support the planning and conduct of management and independent assessments, lead business process improvement events, and generally help to foster a lab-wide culture of continuous improvement that seeks to increase the efficiency and maximize the value of NREL’s business processes and operations.

Duties generally include
  • Creating assessment plans,
  • Collecting quantitative and qualitative data and information,
  • Interviewing personnel,
  • Evaluating and conducting complex analyses,
  • Documenting existing business process workflows and evaluating process efficiency,
  • Developing improved work processes, and preparing reports, disclosures,
  • Presentations and recommendations related to a specific field or function.
Successful candidate will also be expected to present results to a wide range of NREL and DOE staff members up to and including leadership.

The successful candidate can expect a flexible, hybrid work environment where working from home is embraced, but on-site assessment work will be required frequently.
This professional will need to be living locally and relocation assistance is available for non-local applicants.

Specific Job Duties: (summary for details see complete job description below)
  • Serve as an assessor with the Assessment Management Program at NREL.
  • Responsible for planning and execution of management and independent assessments and projects that require independent judgment and initiative as well as the use of analytical modeling, data analysis, and business problem-solving skills.
  • Revitalize NREL’s continuous improvement program and establish a strong culture of process improvement capability; be the laboratory’s subject matter expert in process improvement.
  • Plans, designs, and implements process and system improvement projects using Lean, Six Sigma, and other methodologies as appropriate, leads process improvement teams.
  • Implement and improve processes and tools for identifying and analyzing trends and measures of organizational performance; assist organizations in developing and reporting on performance measures and process improvements
Basic Qualifications
  • Relevant Bachelor's Degree and 9 or more years of experience or equivalent relevant education/experience.
  • Or, relevant Master's Degree and 7 or more years of experience or equivalent relevant education/experience.
  • Or, relevant PhD and 4 or more years of experience or equivalent relevant education/experience.
  • Or, relevant JD and 4 or more years of experience or equivalent relevant education/experience.
Additional Required Qualifications
  • Experience with Lean process improvement methodologies and techniques, including earned certification in Lean or Six Sigma approaches
  • Excellent consultative, interpersonal, facilitation, and communicative
  • Skills are required and essential to successful job performance.
  • Incumbent will work in an environment requiring initiative, independent judgment, and decision making.
  • The ability to cope with ambiguity and use facilitation, team building, and coaching skills is also required.
  • Experience conducting assessments or reviews to evaluate the effectiveness and compliance of business processes
  • Bachelor’s degree in science, engineering, or business administration, or equivalent relevant experience;
  • Lean Bronze Certification and/or Six Sigma Black Belt,
  • Certified Quality Engineer, or other national/international certification in business process improvement methodologies (required)
  • Quality assurance certifications - CQIA, ASQ
  • 5+ years experience in management consulting/process improvement related fields
Annual Salary Range (based on full-time 40 hours per week)
  • Job Profile: Professional IV / Annual Salary Range: $93,100 - $167,600
  • Job Profile: Professional III / Annual Salary Range: $77,600 - $139,700
