The ASQ Phoenix Section is happy to announce the "soft" launch of its monthly in-person Program meetings. In the spirit of building a local community of practice and fostering a sense of belonging, the October 13, 2022, Program meeting will be our first in-person meeting since March 2020. (The meeting will actually be a hybrid - we will continue to offer a virtual option).

The in-person option of the October 13 Program meeting has been canceled due to a lack of interest.

SPEAKER: Karen Hulting, Coach and Statistician at Medtronic


TOPIC: “Proving Equivalence”

BIO: Karen Hulting is a Distinguished Coach and Statistician at Medtronic. Over 27 years at Medtronic, she has applied a broad range of statistical methods in manufacturing, R&D, and quality. Her current role is in Systems Engineering in the Diabetes Operating Unit. Karen holds master's and Ph.D. degrees in Statistics from Iowa State University and an undergraduate degree in Mathematics from St. Olaf College. She is a Fellow of the ASQ and an adjunct instructor in the St. Cloud State University Medical Technology Quality graduate program in Plymouth, MN.

ABSTRACT: A key skill for quality professionals is documenting evidence that a change in process or product inputs have not impacted process or product performance. The two-sample equivalence test is an important statistical tool used to generate this evidence. Participants will learn practical steps to carry out an equivalence study that will stand up to regulatory scrutiny – and even more important – reduce the chance of fooling themselves that performance hasn’t changed.

For example, a process owner might want to compare the average strength of an adhesive joint before and after an unexpected incoming material change. The usual statistical tool for comparing averages is the 2-sample t-test, but the 2-sample t-test can only provide evidence of a difference between the means. In order to establish evidence of equivalence of the means, it’s critical to use the 2-sample equivalence test.

In this session, participants will learn the distinctions between the 2-sample t-test and the 2-sample equivalence test, learn how to use Minitab ™ or JMP ™ software to plan and execute an equivalence study and see real-world case studies where the 2-sample equivalence test was applied. We’ll cover recommendations for the challenging step of determining, from subject-matter expertise, an appropriate range of equivalence. The key takeaway from this session will be increased awareness of a valuable tool in quality improvement and assurance.
